The Last Year Game

I talked to one of my old friends yesterday. She and I went to middle school together, but she moved away before high school, so we don't see each other as often as we used to anymore.

We were reminiscing about last year and somehow we started saying, "This time last year this, this time last year that." That's when I realized it's something I always do, with everyone.

One year ago I barely knew some of the people who are my best friends now.

Two years ago I lived halfway across the world.

I love to see how different my life is every year. It's a brilliant game I play that helps me reflect on everything. I just thought I'd share it with you all. Until next time, keep smiling!

Here are the top 5 things that everyone who doesn't see their best friend[s] everyday will understand.

1. Jealousy: When there are best friends at your school who hang out all the time and you get jealous. Then you wish that you could, in some way, see your best friend more. But it just never seems to happen. Despite that, they're still the first person to know when something happens, the person who knows everything about everyone and the person who you go to first when you're feeling down.
2. Time differences: If your best friend happens to live in a different time zone, it can be hard to talk to them all the time. Especially if they live on a whole other continent. One of you (maybe both) ends up giving up their sleep to talk to the other. You have to plan a time to FaceTime and always calculate time to make sure it's not too late for a call. Speaking of calculating time, you're always doing it. Anytime anything happens, you immediately calculate their time to see if they'll be awake to hear about it.
3. You talk about them a lot: All your school friends and basically anyone you see more often than your best friend knows about them. They're probably sick of hearing about your best friend, and they've probably seen enough pictures of them to be able to recognize them in the middle of a crowd.
4. Gossip spreading...not: Your best friend knows the gossip about everyone in your life, even though they've never met half the people. You know that telling them even the most confidential information is 100% safe, because there will be absolutely no way they ever come face to face with the person you told them about.
5. World news: You know all the news from the place that your best friend stays, so you sound extremely smart in a conversation with someone who's stayed in one area their whole life. Them: "My life is boring. I wish something would happen." You:"Well, there were a few stray cheetahs in a school in Bangalore, would you like me to put you there?"
